History Of Thwaite Mills

Thwaite Mills in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, is a significant industrial heritage site.

Built between 1823 and 1825, it was a fully restored working water-powered mill.

 

The site has a rich history, starting as a fulling mill in 1641 and evolving through various uses, including oil crushers and dye manufacturers. The mill was self-sufficient, with workshops, orchards, and pastures, and generated its own power until 1986. It was closed in 1976 after a dam breach, and the Thwaite Mills Society was formed to restore the site. 

The museum opened in 1990 and closed in 2024.
